The report, published in the Chemical Research in Toxicology, shows that chemicals cause the cancer, quickly after smoking.
Scientists involved in the small study evaluated the results as a serious warning to those looking at the smoking.
Tobacco charity Ash describes the investigation as "appalling" and a warning that it's never too early to quit.
The long-term use of tobacco, heart disease in a number of cancers, is known. This study suggests that the damage begins shortly after smoking the first cigarette.
Faster than you think
The researchers analyzed the levels of chemicals linked to cancer, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 12 patients after smoking.
PAH was the cigarettes in the matter, which was subsequently amended by the body and is converted into another chemical that damages DNA and cancer was associated added.
Research shows that this has lasted process between 15 and 30 minutes to take his place.
Professor Stephen Hecht, University of Minnesota, said: "This study is unique, is the first, the metabolism of the human-specific PAH by inhalation of cigarette smoke emitted study, without interference from other sources of exposure, such as air pollution or food.
The results presented here should serve as a stern warning to those contemplating starting to smoke cigarettes. "
Martin Dockrell, policy and research director of Ash (Action on Health and snuff), said: "Almost everyone knows that smoking can cause lung cancer.
"The slowdown in the majority of this research is to show how early the early stages of this process has begun - not 30 years, but study after 30 minutes, a single cigarette for each tray.
"The process starts early, but it is never too late to quit and the sooner you leave the sooner you begin to reduce losses."
The research was funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute.
